No School = The Zoo

On September 26, Addy & Alex were out of school for the opening of the Ft. Bend County fair. But instead of going to the fair, we decided to go to one of Addy's favorite places...the zoo!

We met up with some friends

and then cruised around the zoo checking out all the animals.

The kids also played in the African forest.

Crawled through the tunnel in the Rainforest house.

And pet the farm animals in the Children's Zoo.

Well... Addy pet the farm animals in the Children's Zoo.
Alex sat on this bench & refused to pet even one animal!
He said they were dirty & smelled bad!
Good point buddy ;)

We also rode the carousel.

Addy rode on a zebra & Alex started out on an elephant.

But quickly changed his mind & rode on the non moving bench seat.
That's my boy & rides! lol

After the zoo, the kids walked around the lake

and rode the train around Herman Park.

It was a fun day but we also had a really scary incident occur. While we were in the children's area, Addy disappeared. She & I were looking at the swan, she walked off & when I turned around she was gone. I went back to the play area where Alex & our friends were & she wasn't there. So I start looking for her & the longer it goes without me finding her, the more worried I became. So I grabbed the first zoo employee I could find & told him that I could not find my daughter. He asked me what she looked like, sent an all call over his radio & started to help me search for her. We rechecked the children's area & didn't find her. So I asked my friend to stay with Alex in the children's area in case she came back & the zoo employee & I started walking towards the zebras, which is what she had been asking to see all day. As soon as we walked out of the children's area, my friend called me & said that they found Addy & at the same time, the employee got a call on his radio also stating that they had located her. Where had she gone you might wonder, well apparently she was hungry & she was looking for food.

She's matured so much over the past couple of years that I thought we had moved past her elopement issues, but apparently we have not.

And so now my guard is back up.
Big time!

One Last Hurrah... Jellystone Park

The weekend before school started, we took the kids to Jellystone Park for one last summer hurrah!

We stayed in a Yogi cabin.

Which had a bedroom for Nick & I & an upstairs loft area for the kids.

It also had a futon in the living room.
(Which is where Alex & I ended up sleeping because he was too scared to sleep upstairs.)

The park has several things for kids to do...

like mini golf

(Not so sure about that golf swing!)

an awesome playground

and meeting Yogi Bear live in person bear!

But the main reason we went there was for this...
the water park & slides!

Which is where we spent most of our time.

After 2 days at the water park, it was time to peace out go home.

On the way out, we stopped for Addy to take one last picture with Yogi.

We had actually rented the cabin for a second night but at the end of the 2nd day, Nick & I agreed that it was time to go home. We had a good time, but the cabin was a little 'rustic' for us. And our beds were only about an hour away. So why not go home & sleep in them, right!!

So to sum up our trip...
Did we have a good time?
Yes!
Will we go back?
Maybe to the water park for the day.
But we definitely won't be overnighting there again!

Ft. Lauderdale

Nick had to go to Miami for a work conference in July. So I decided to meet him in Florida afterwards for an adult vacation. Instead of Miami though,  we stayed in Ft. Lauderdale, which is much more our speed.. LAID BACK!

Now Nick & I usually like adventurous vacations but this vacation was not adventurous. NOT AT ALL! It was relaxing & low key. And it was just what we needed!

Our hotel was on A1A (Beachfront Avenue) and it was right across the street from the beach. (As all the hotels are in Ft. Lauderdale.)

Here's the view from our room.

Every morning, we would wake up, Nick would go downstairs & get us coffee from the Starbucks on the first floor of the hotel (such a gentleman) while I was getting ready & then we would walk across the breezeway

and drink our coffee on the beach.

And then we would spend several hours swimming

and laying out.

Around lunchtime, we would take a stroll on the boardwalk & stop to eat at a place that had a view like this!
(And that allowed you to eat in swimsuits & cover ups :)

And then after lunch, we would head back to the beach for a few more hours.

I think every single day that we were there, a storm blew in right around 4pm.

Which ended up being a perfect time for us to head back to our room to take a shower & get ready for dinner. For dinners,

we went to nicer places

where the patrons weren't in swimsuits & cover ups :)

And after dinner, we would take a walk on the beach.

The one 'adventure' that we did have was when we stumbled upon a sea turtle nest excavation! Which was super cool!!

So all over the beaches in Ft. Lauderdale there are sea turtle nests. Like hundreds & probably even thousands of them.

Broward County has a conservation program that identifies, marks & monitors the nests. Every morning, super early, the monitors walk the beach in search of new nests & hatchlings. When they find a nest, they mark it like this...

This nest was discovered on July 15th & it is a loggerhead nest, marked with a CC with stands for Caretta Caretta, the Latin name for a loggerhead.

Loggerhead eggs take about 45 days to incubate. So once it gets close to that number, the monitors start checking the nests for hatchlings. Once they see signs of hatchlings, they mark the nest with an extra flag (I think they add the blue one) and they alert Nova University. Nova comes out & double checks the nest & if they also see signs of hatchings, they mark it with their flag (which I think is the green one.) And then...

someone from Nova comes out & digs up the nest.

Sometimes when the eggs hatch, not all the babies are able to dig their way to the surface & are just trapped in the nest. And this is why the conservationists dig them up.

And I know all this information because I asked him A LOT of questions! Other people were asking "Where's the mom? You mean she just leaves them? How mean!" (Come on people, they're animals, that's what they do!) But I asked questions about how this whole process works.

So this guy dug up the nest & all the hatchlings that he rescued, he put in a bucket. (An orange Home Depot bucket to be exact. That's why this picture has an orange tint to it!) The eggs that did not incubate, he put those back in the nest & reburied them.

He said that he brings the hatchlings back to his house for the day & he comes back to the beach at night & releases them. How cool is that!

So that was our vacation... 4 days of relaxing fun in the sun & a sea turtle science lesson!
