Field Day 2015

SOE Field Day was on Friday, May 1st. The past 3 years that Addy has been at Scanlan Oaks, Field Day has mostly consisted of bouncy houses & inflatables. But this year was different. This year was a throwback to what Field Day was like when I was in elementary school. (Well kind of anyway.) The theme was Keeping It Old School & it was a lot of fun!

There were 10 stations set up outside. The plan was for the classes to be able to rotate between all 10 stations in a one hour time slot. Unfortunately, that did not happen & the classes made it to 6 or 7 of the stations. The kids didn't even realize that they didn't get to do everything & had lots & lots of fun at the stations they did go to!

The day started with Kindergarten.

Some of the stations that Alex's class participated in were...

The 3 legged race

where Alex was partnered up with Avery.

My son is not the most coordinated child though & they fell down 3 or 4 times!

The obstacle course.

The 'When Pigs Fly' plastic pig toss

And the Scooter Relay Races.

Alex's class did a few more of the stations, but I was subbing for another Kindergarten class so I didn't get to see him do everything.

2nd Grade came out to Field Day around 10:30ish.

Some of the stations that Addy's class participated in were...

The Ballon Pop

The Scooter Relay Races.

When Pigs Fly.

The Sack Races.

And the Egg & Spoon Race.

Her class also did the game where they tried to fill up a bucket by squeezing water out of sponges. Addy did not participate in that one though because she did not want to get wet!

Another thing that was different this year was that the kids got to watch a magic show as part of Field Day. Alex said the magician was awesome!

And as always, the kids got to eat a Kona ice snow cone.
(Or as Alex calls it, a cone of ice!)

GS Troop 3124 Camp Day

On April 25th, our Girl Scout troop spent the day at Camp Windemere in Alvin.

We left Sienna around noon & got to camp around 1:00 pm. Upon arriving, the girls helped unload all the supplies & set everything up.

And then after all that hard work, it was definitely time for a snack!

After snack time, we went on a hike in search of wood for our campfire.

And not only did the girls find lots of wood on our hike, but they also found lots of mud puddles!

Thank goodness for rainboots!

We hiked all the way to the teepees

& then turned around & headed back to our campsite.

The next thing that we did was go over a few fire safety rules & have the girls practice striking a match

and blowing it out.

Once all the girls had had a turn lighting a match, they were ready to light the campfire!

We partnered them up & each pair was given a torch.

The torches were lit

and then the girls lowered the torches into the fire ring to start the fire.
This way each & every girl got to participate in the lighting of our very first troop campfire!

Our next activity was to start to prepare for dinner. To do this, the girls broke up into their camp patrols to tackle their dinner duties.

One patrol was in charge of cooking dinner.

One patrol was in charge of washing dishes.

And Addy was part of the hospitality patrol which was in charge of setting the tables, pouring drinks,

and making centerpieces.

I was super impressed with what they came up with for the centerpieces!
Flowers & greenery with toilet paper vases!

When dinner was ready, we gathered around the table & said grace. The hospitality patrol was in charge of picking a grace & they chose to have everyone at the table say what they are thankful for.

And then it was time for dinner!

Which was spaghetti with ground beef & marinara sauce, bow tie pasta with butter & Caesar salad.

As you can see, dinner was a big hit!

And it really was surprisingly delicious!
(And I say surprisingly because 1. I am not a camper & am not used to food that is cooked on a propane stove. And 2. because it was cooked by 7 & 8 year olds & according to Alex, no one under the age of 18 knows how to cook. Lol)

After dinner, we roasted marshmallows

and ate smores!

The girls learned lots of new camping skills, but of course the day wasn't all work & no play.
There was lots of time for fun activites...

Such as stomping in the mud,

catching bugs,

flying kites

and making SWAPS!

I was pretty worried about how this day was going to turn out because it was pouring rain just an hour before we were scheduled to leave for camp. But the rain stopped & the girls embraced the mud! And it turned out to be a really awesome experience!

And a big thank you to my fantastic troop co-leader who planned the whole thing! This day would have never happened without her ;)

Alex's Kindergarten Field Trip

On April 22nd, Alex's Kindergarten class went on a field trip to the Bayou Wildlife Park in Alvin.

This was the first time for Alex to go to the Bayou Wildlife Park. But I have been there twice with Addy on both her Kindergarten field trips.

The kids were paired up & Alex's buddy for the day was Dylan L.

The school bus got to the park with the kids around 10am & since that is their usual lunch time (yes, I know, it's super early for lunch!!!) they were starving! So we tried to eat lunch right away. But, we ran into a bit of a problem...  the deer!

So instead, the boys had a quick snack & we rode the animal tram.

This was definitely the highlight of the day for most of the kids.
On the tram ride, the kids got to see & feed lots of exotic animals, including...

antelopes

llamas

water buffalos

zebras

ostriches

a longhorn

and camels

But Alex's favorite part of the ride was when we went down a hill because it was like a roller coaster ride. (But not like the space mountain roller coaster, because we all know how much he liked that, right!)

I have to say that Alex is definitely not Addy. This was not the place for him. While Addy loves to be outside & look at & learn about animals, Alex does not. He was hot & bored during the tram ride (except for the roller coaster hill part!)

But what he did enjoy during the field trip was hanging out with his friends!

The Bayou Wildlife Park is really a pretty cool place. But I'm fairly sure that neither Alex nor I would be sad if we never go again! (3 times is enough for me!)
